Michael Oxman and L. Beril Toktay of the Ray C. Anderson Center for Sustainable Business (“Center”) at Scheller College of Business highlight achievements in Atlanta’s sustainability efforts in Sustainable Brands.

In celebration of the Center’s fifth anniversary, they note key moments of significance for our city such as: the establishment of the Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge in 2011; Midtown Atlanta becoming the first urban eco-district in the Southeast in 2012, positioning the city as one of the most livable and sustainable districts in the country; and Atlanta’s selection from among 1,000 international applicants to join the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities Initiative in 2016.

Ongoing commitments to sustainability at Georgia Tech include the founding of the Center for Serve-Learn-Sustain, a campus-wide initiative to educate students around the theme “creating sustainable communities,” and the Carbon Reduction Challenge (CRC), a collaboration between the Center and Georgia Tech’s Global Change Program. Established in 2017, the CRC tasks students with identifying ways for their employers to reduce carbon emissions. CRC projects launched this past summer have resulted in over two million pounds of avoided CO2 emissions and are projected to deliver hundreds of thousands of dollars in avoided energy costs at partner organizations.
